Rose City pair to box for youth games spots
BOXING: Rose City Boxing Club pair Jacko McMahon and Jake Wyllie will fly to Adelaide on Sunday to compete in the Australian Boxing Association titles.
McMahon will compete in the 75kg division and Wyllie will be in the 64kg division.
Both are current state champions and Wyllie is a national golden gloves titleholder.
Rose City head coach Damien Lawler said the boxers had been training well for the championships.
"They are the fittest and the sharpest they have been in the run up to a major tournament,” he said.
"We have been doing a lot of travelling to gyms in Brisbane and the Gold Coast for spars in the run up to the nationals.”
Both will weigh in early Monday and their first fights could be on Monday afternoon.
"Jacko and Jake could have up to four fights if they make it to the gold medal fight,” Lawler said.
"I absolutely believe they can both fight off for the gold medals.”
Lawler has no doubt that their toughest opponents will be boxers from NSW.
”They haven't fought any of the New South Wales boxers they will be up against this weekend,” he said.
"Jacko has twice beaten the South Australian champion who is in his division next week.”
The boxers are fighting for spots in the Australian team for the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas. The winner of each division will be selected in the national team.
