Rose City stitching on smiles
AVID knitters and crafters around Warwick have been busy preparing for the Jumpers and Jazz festival which officially launched last night.
Among the myriad knitted creations is Joe the Scarecrow, created by local crafter Joy Softley to sit outside the Warwick Horticultural Society Gardening Extravaganza.
What started off as a friendly favour soon became a large undertaking as Joe's costume became more elaborate.
"I decided to do something specially for Margot (Warwick Horticultural Society secretary)," Mrs Softley said.
"I started off in about April making his clothes and then decided to knit him all his fruit, and his sandwich," she said.
Mrs Softley, who learnt to knit as a child, has enjoyed crafting knitted creations for the festival since she and her husband John moved to Warwick 11 years ago.
"I've made things on and off for a while - I made a shawl when the Kransky Sisters came to town," Mrs Softley said.
"What I like about it is you can sit at home and do bits and pieces on your own but then you mix with all the people involved, which is lovely," she said.
"The people in Warwick are so friendly and they just can't do enough to help you."
Catch Joe at the Warwick Gardening Extravaganza at St Mary's Hall on July 22-23, from 9am-4pm.
