Rose City tennis tournament attracts 100 players

TENNIS: Steve Forbes hails from Dalby but when there is a tennis tournament in Warwick, he is there so family members can have a go.

One hundred players were in Warwick at the weekend for the Warwick Credit Union Southern Downs Junior Tennis Championships on 10 association courts in

Fitzroy St.

Games were also played on four courts at Warwick State High School.

Forbes is the Dalby tennis president and said Warwick and Dalby had similar facilities and programs.

"It is a great family outing to Warwick,” he said.

"Warwick is a great place to stay and the tennis facilities are good.”

Warwick Tennis Association president Nathan Costello said the tournament attracted players from as far as Melbourne, Coffs Harbour, Sunshine and Gold

coasts, Brisbane, Miles and Moree.

"Billy Mutch from Allora won two of his four games in the 12 years and under age group,” Costello said.

"The tournament was a points event for Australian rankings as players aimed to boost their seedings for future tournaments.”

Tournament director Emma Creighton hails

from Toowoomba and said many of the parents and coaches came to the Warwick tournament

each year.

"Games were played well into the night on Saturday,” she said.

"A boy from Melbourne and his mother flew up for the tournament.”

The weekend tournament was the biggest for the

year in Warwick and was run by a large group of volunteers who turn up each year to support their association.
