Rose City trio win two state boxing championships
BOXING: "Awesome” was the word used by Rose City Boxing Club head trainer Damien Lawler after Jacko McMahon and Jake Wyllie won state titles at Acacia Ridge at the weekend.
"The state championships were a fantastic tournament, a lot of the fans spoke about the success of the boys from Rose City,” Lawler said.
"These boys have had a massive year in a one-on-one combat sport and put Rose City boxing on the map. They are great ambassadors for sport in Warwick.”
Wyllie was first up from Rose City and won a unanimous points decision on Friday night and then received the decision from all judges again on Saturday in the final of the 60kg junior division.
McMahon went straight into the final and totally dominated his opponent with some strong overhand left hooks.
Lawler said the two boxers had enjoyed an outstanding year.
"Everyone in Queensland boxing now know they have to beat these two boys if they want to win titles in their divisions,” he said.
McMahon retained his Queensland title while Wyllie won his second state title after first winning in 2014.
It was the last state tournament for the pair as juniors and they now go into the youth division.
Wyllie will captain Darling Downs Country in the battle against City on Saturday night at a Smithy promotion at Rumours and then have a short break from competition. McMahon will have a break from competition for two months but both will keep training. Club member Britnee Wallace has been invited to the AIS in Canberra for a 2018 Commonwealth Games Development Camp.
