THE skies above Mooloolaba have played host to everything from flocks of seagulls to New Year's Eve fireworks.

But they've never featured anything as spectacular as the RAAF's Roulettes.

On the stroke of 4pm today, the six Pilatus PC-9A aircrafts performed a 13-minute show above the Mooloolaba Esplanade, reaching up to 580kmh.

Hundreds lined the foreshore to watch the event while even people as far away at Buderim and Sippy Downs reported being able to see them perform.

The visit was part of a state tour by the team with Flying Officer Richard Morris earlier promising the show would be packed with tricks and manoeuvres.

"It has been redesigned this year so that there is no time in the show where there is nothing happening," Mr Morris said.

"The last couple of months we have been practising so we are happy to get out there and do our job again and put smiles on faces.

"A lot of people think there is a trick to what we do, but in the vast majority of manoeuvres, the planes literally are a metre apart.

"There is a lot of training and co-ordination in it that makes it just right."

One of the team's favourites tricks is the Roulette Mirror in which two jets fly belly-to-belly - one upside down and the other right way up - while the other four jets performed tricks.

"They look good and sound fantastic.

"When all six fly together it has a good sound and the colour scheme is iconic."

The team's pilots will visit Maroochydore Primary tomorrow to give students a thrill.

"The message we want to get across is that if you work hard and are dedicated you can live your dream," Mr Morris said.
