A THREE-year-old whose mother and grandfather were stabbed to death is now asking for help as she battles leukaemia and blindness.

The 42-year-old was a paranoid schizophrenic, who killed his family members after being invited to dinner.

Ruby suffered serious injuries to her face in the attack but quickly recovered with treatment.

Her family was told to prepare for the worst.

After first arrived in hospital, Ruby suffered a cerebral haemorrhage, which left her unable to see.

"And then we got the phone call to go and say goodbye, so it was one day. A one day time frame. It was unbelievably quick," Ruby's aunt Penny Heuston told Mamamia.

Ruby's father Ben said the family walked into hospital and when she woke up the next day, she was blind and they were told "she's going to die".

Ruby has now spent 114 days in hospital and has learned how to walk again. She remains blind.

She is expected to undergo chemotherapy until at least 2017.

Her father is now attempting to raise money for his daughter so she can access a full-time occupational therapist and return to school.

In the days since the family have gone public with Ruby's struggle, the family has already raised more than $40,000 via crowdfunding website YouCaring.
