Rugby League returns to Sullivan Oval

RUGBY LEAGUE: The last time Stanthorpe players ran out on to Sullivan Oval, they were lifting the BRL trophy but Saturday will mark a different occasion.

A combined Stanthorpe/Texas side will make its Stanthorpe debut this weekend.

After claiming their first win last week against Wallangarra, the combined outfit will be up against the second-placed Inglewood Roosters.

Inglewood has only lost to the undefeated Tenterfield Tigers this season.

Stanthorpe/Texas captain Nathan Shatte admitted it would be a tough ask.

“This week it’ll be pretty hard. Still, at times, there’s a few costly errors in bad positions on the field costing us,” he said.

“We just want to keep improving on that effort and keep getting better and better.”

With 100km between them, training as a team has been the biggest setback this year.

“It’s getting there: The more games we’ve played, the boys are getting to know each other,” Shatte said.

“Obviously it’s hard with training: We just have to keep improving and stay with it.”

Shatte said he’d like to see an improvement in their kicking game.

“Our kicking game, I think we can improve. A lot of them aren’t kicking long or deep enough,” he said. “Our execution, just a few little things. It will all come in time.”

Last week Stanthorpe/Texas welcomed back forward Kyle Marsh, who crossed the line in his first game back.

“He makes a big difference: He breaks the line a lot,” Shatte said.

The landscape of senior rugby league in Stanthorpe has changed markedly since their premiership and Shatte said it would be a familiar feeling at Sullivan on Saturday.

“It’s been a while, we haven’t played there since the grand final so its been a few months,” he said. “The Stanthorpe boys are pretty keen.”

The Border Bushrangers under-18s will also play Dalby at Sullivan Oval on Saturday, in the TRL competition.

A canteen and bar will operate. Admission is $5.

GAMES: 1.30pm Border v Dalby; 2.45pm; Stanthorpe/ Texas v Inglewood.
