Wattles go down in a close game

DAVID McGrady scored 21 points as Goondiwindi beat Wattles 35-34 in yesterday’s A-grade TRL game at Platz Oval.

McGrady scored four tries, landed two conversions and then kicked a field goal three minutes from full-time to put his side 35-28 in front.

Prop Ashley Evans scored after the hooter for Wattles and Robert Woodbridge converted.

After 10 minutes Wattles led 16-4 but halfway through the first half Goondiwindi had come back to level the scores.

Wattles kicked away to lead 28-16 at half-time before Goondiwindi fought back in the second half.

The penalty count was 12-4 to Goondiwindi as the Wattles defence fell away a little in the second half.

The win consolidates Goondiwindi in the top five and dramatically reduces the Wattles’ hopes of featuring in the finals.

Second rowers Glen McMillan and Luke Baker, five-eighth Jeff Nielsen and winger Dale Dempsey were the best for Wattles.

Nielsen scored two tries in a top performance.

Jordan Henry, Lauchlan Hoey and Aaron Hooper were the best as Wattles won 52-18 in reserve grade.

Both Hooper and former Brisbane Broncos NRL player Tony Duggan scored two tries for Wattles.

Goondiwindi won the under-18 game 46-36.

Michael Nauschutz, Jim Johnson and Carl Gale were the best for Wattles.
