Rush to keep snakes at bay

AFTER a recent spate of snake sightings throughout Warwick, Rose City residents have turned to new methods to help them feel safe and secure.

Inquiries into products such as the Snake Defence MP Plus have increased as people look for ways to keep the reptiles away from their homes.

Kylie Morton of Aquabird in Warwick - which sells the Snake Defence MP Plus - said people had been asking about such products in recent weeks.

"They have been a big seller down south and so they brought them to Queensland," she said. "They sold very well at a show we had in Toowoomba."

She said the products worked by emitting signals into the ground and air to fend off snakes.

The product uses batteries and solar power to keep it running through the day and night and covers a 30m radius.

Installed simply by pushing the pointed end into the ground, the repellent changes signals every two days so snakes won't get used to them, but don't affect other animals.

A large brown snake was spotted and captured near Eagle Boys of Fitzroy St last week and some Warwick residents have reported seeing snakes in their backyards.

A spokesman for the Department of Environment recommended calling snake removers who were licensed by the department and operated on a commercial basis.

"The public can contact them directly and contact details are listed in local phone directories," he said.

"Alternatively, local councils may be able to provide advice.

"Typically, captured snakes are released back into the wild at a location where they are unlikely to cause further problems."

Local snake handler Lyn Gynther of Yangan is on 4664 8476.
