Ryle Waugh selected for national squad series in Warwick

POLOCROSSE: Cunningham player Ryle Waugh has the chance of a lifetime on August 19-21 after her inclusion in a team for the national squad weekend at Morgan Park.

Australian squads have been divided into two teams of ladies and two of men to play games on each day of the IOR Petroleum Rose Bowl Carnival.

Waugh's selection was after she won three of the major awards after a 2-1 series victory against South Africa at under-21 level last month at Port Elizabeth in South Africa.

Polocrosse Association of Australia president Rodney Geppert said Waugh more than matched it with South African open Test player Natalie McLarty in the series.

"Ryle always played No.1 (goal shooter) in the series so was up against Natalie, Ryle wasn't bothered by her at all,” Geppert said.

There will be games between Australian Gold and Green teams from the ladies' and men's national squads on the Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday of the Rose Bowl.

While Waugh has played in two winning Test series in intermediates, the August games in Warwick will be her first at squad or national level in open company.

Waugh and Farann Mathie from New South Wales are the two U21 players in the open squad games.

If she impresses at Morgan Park on August 19-21, Waugh could put herself into contention for selection in the Australian team for the home ladies' series against South Africa next year, a mixed series in Zambia in 2018 and the 2019 World Cup.
