Saddle bronc star wins WDN/WCU sports award
MICHAEL Maher has won a third successive Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star of the Month award after winning another saddle bronc title at the Mt Isa Rotary Rodeo.
Rodeo experts said in 2015 it was extremely rare for one rider to win back-to-back titles at Mt Isa and fast forward a year and Maher did it again to make it three wins in three years at the richest rodeo in the nation.
He won the first round and final at Mt Isa this year with two scores of 75 to win overall by six points from Brad Pierce and John McNamee, two national title winners.
After a bad landing after his final win at Mt Isa, Maher missed two months of action with injury before competing in the Warwick Rodeo National Finals for the second successive time at the Warwick Showgrounds. He went into the finals in sixth place in the standings.
Maher competed in his first national finals rodeo at the Gold Coast in 2011, where he was second overall.
He is one of 11 monthly winners who will receive $100 from Warwick Credit Union and be honoured at the awards dinner this year.
