Safety fears shut cracked swim centre grandstand

THE grandstand at Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre will not be ready in time for the upcoming swimming carnival season, as a fix for the crack in concrete will be subject to a council meeting.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) business and community services director David Tuxford said council had fenced off the WIRAC grandstand seating area in August following advice from engineering company Cardno.

"Cardno had found the fault and recommended the area be cordoned off and temporary props be installed," he said. "The props were installed not long after the issue was identified."

A structural engineer has lodged a report to SDRC, and Mr Tuxford said council would consider it at the December meeting.

"We realise this is an important issue that needs addressing but we needed to have a comprehensive assessment of the fault and then a permanent solution devised," he said.

"The WIRAC summer swimming carnivals have started and we will work toward having the grandstand available as soon as possible.

"Council apologises for the inconvenience, however safety is the first priority for all WIRAC clients and staff."
