Put safety first when using the Fitzroy River

WITH plenty of people on the water this holiday season, we're being reminded to stay safe on the Fitzroy River this Christmas.

Team McMillan Division 5 candidate Bob Pleash is urging the community to ensure they exercise safety on the water with the Ski Gardens in Wandal a popular destination for boaties.

Mr Pleash, a Fitzroy user himself, said it was important to abide by all the relevant maritime rules and regulations so that everyone got the opportunity to enjoy this tremendous asset.

"Apart from the obvious mechanical compliance of your water craft, it is essential to ensure you have the mandatory licence to operate the water craft and in particular observe the six-knot speed limit between the boat ramps to a point just above Lion Creek. Also ensure water skiing is conducted in the designated upstream area with an observer," Mr Pleash said.

"The last thing we want to see is a serious accident occur and mar someone's family holiday.

"It's like anything - courtesy and consideration of others goes a long way."

Mr Pleash said the Ski Gardens were a gem in the region and they needed to be looked after; reminding users to keep it neat and tidy and use the bins provided.

"Let's take pride and ownership of gems like the Ski Gardens so we can all continue to use these wonderful facilities safely into the future," he said.
