Safety not the big concern of nuclear waste facility
NUCLEAR waste safety is the least of Oman Ama property owner Andrew Clark-Dickson's worries.
Instead, the long-time local has concerns about the land values and reputation of the area.
Mr Clark-Dickson heads up the Traprock Group, which represents producers in the Inglewood region.
He runs a 2800 hectare sheep property Artunga, about 10km from the proposed nuclear waste facility.
"Personally I don't think there's anything to worry about with the nuclear waste at a low/medium level," he said.
"There is opposition to it, but personally I'm not worried about that side.
"I can see other issues that will have an affect on capital values, the region's reputation - a lot of landholders don't want to be known for a nuclear waste dump."
In his talks with farmers in the area, Mr Clark-Dickson said there was one concern that stood out in particular.
"The biggest worry is the capital value of the properties more than worrying about the clean, green image," he said.
"It's mainly the capital value that everyone is worried about and what will happen there."
The Oman Ama area is highly valued for sheep and cattle production.
Mr Clark-Dickson said the Inglewood - Oman Ama region was large and home to a diverse range of landholders.
"It's a changing demographic - there are a lot of lifestyle blocks appearing," he said.
"There will be lots of little blocks affected by the proposal - there are a heap of neighbours."
The issue has thrown the tiny little community into the national spotlight.
"It was a complete surprise," Mr Clark-Dickson said.
"No one had heard of us beforehand and then all of a sudden we're on the media map."
Mr Clark-Dickson is hoping to get some answers on what benefits the proposal would bring and what money would come into the area.
"It's all a bit wishy washy at the moment," he said.
Artunga will play host to a community meeting with government representatives on Saturday afternoon.
Another community meeting will be held on Monday next week at the Inglewood Civic Centre at 6pm.
Government officers will also be available for one-on-one meetings on Tuesday next week from 9am.
