Southern Downs Salvo pair head to new pastures in Taree

IF THERE is one thing captains Mark and Cathryn Williamson are going to miss most about the Southern Downs, it's the community spirit.

For three years, the couple have been the face of the Salvation Army for the region but yesterday they packed up their lives and headed south to Taree.

Mr Williamson said while he was excited to embark on a new adventure, he would always have a soft spot for the people of the Rose City.

"We just want to thank the people of Warwick for their support," he said.

Mr Williamson yesterday celebrated his birthday and said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of his neighbour.

"One of my neighbours brought over a cake in the shape of my 1950s Ford ute (which has been in his family since 1950)," he said.

"For them to remember my birthday and make a cake in the shape of my ute; that just speaks volumes of the acceptance in the community."

And so the pair set off with their 300 boxes in tow, and though they don't plan to come back to Warwick straight away, they would certainly visit sometime in the future.

"You never know when we might pop back!" Mr Williamson said.
