Sam Thaiday: Five sporting gaffes stars probably regret

Athletes can provide some inspirational quotes from time to time but just as often they say something they may later regret - silly or controversial, as Sam Thaiday well knows after his post Origin comment last night.

Here's our top five controversial quotes just from the past year…

Brisbane Broncos centre James Roberts

The Broncos centre backed himself against his speedy teammate Corey Oates after a Round 1 victory over the Eels.

Asked post-game if Oates could match him for pace, Roberts dead-panned back: "Yeah, he's pretty fast. But I've got more speed than Oxford Street."

Indian Wells tournament director Raymond Moore

On March 20, Moore said: "In my next life, when I come back, I want to be someone in the WTA because they ride on the coattails of the men. They don't make any decisions, and they are lucky. They are very, very lucky.

"If I was a lady player, I'd go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa(el) Nadal were born because they have carried this sport. They really have." He resigned the next day.

West Indian cricketer Chris Gayle

On January 5, Gayle, playing for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, landed himself in a controversy following an interview with Channel Ten journalist Mel McLaughlin.

"I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well. That's the reason why I'm here, just to see your eyes for the first time. Hopefully we can win this game and we can have a drink later. Don't blush, baby," he said.

Nick Kyrgios.

Kyrgios has become well known for his on-court sledging, attracting complaints and reprimands several times in the last 12 months.

The most infamous incident was a match against Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka in 2015, when the on-court microphone picked up Kyrgios sledging his opponent: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend."

Bernard Tomic.

Last month, Tomic told a Gold Coast Bulletin journalist about his care factor after tanking on a match point at the Madrid Masters.

"I don't care about that match point - would you care if you were 23 and worth over $10 million."
