Savvy cycling at SOTE

A CRASH course in road safety has ensured the School of Total Education Years 6 and 7 students are more safety savvy than ever.

The safety conscious students completed a two-day program at the PCYC Centre in Toowoomba.

Year 7 student Bennett McLaren said he found the course particularly helpful as he rides to school regularly.

"I feel a lot more confident and have a better understanding of road rules, especially what to do as a cyclist," he said.

The course was practical and provided students with real-life traffic scenarios.

Stop and give way signs, pedestrian crossing signs, railway crossing lights and signs, traffic lights and roundabouts were all part of the bitumen road circuit.

Along with the practical sessions were theory sessions, which added more depth of information to rules and situations already discussed in the practical sessions.

Both days included two theory and two practical sessions, with a test in both areas on the last day.

"The course was informative and helpful to riders of various levels of ability" teacher Jo Collins said.

"It was a great program for the students to participate in, introducing and educating them on the correct approach to road rules."
