School leaders support World's Greatest Shave

INSPIRING things can happen when people join together for a good cause, as two 11-year-old girls have proven.

Best friends Felicity Novley and Bonnie Brown had joined forces in the fight against cancer, bravely signing up to participate in the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave.

The cause is personal for the girls, with family and friends who have suffered from cancer.

The Warwick Central State School students have been busy fundraising ahead of their shave on Wednesday and hope to raise more than $1000 each.

"My dad's friend, Rob, had cancer, and he donated $150," Bonnie said.

"We have raised about $700 each already and our goal is to get $1110 each."

With the support of the school and the P&C, the girls have organised a free dress/funky hair day for students with a sausage sizzle breakfast, a multi-draw raffle.

"We are doing a free dress day for a gold coin donation and a funky hair day," Bonnie said.

"Felicity's mum had cans of coloured hair spray donated to her so we are using those and templates for the hair.

"Felicity's nan is also doing some fundraising."

The girls will also donate their hair to Wigs for Kids, an American-based, not-for-profit organisation that makes wigs for children suffering hair loss for different medical reasons.

"I watched a video of a little girl who had cancer and she was really happy when she got a wig," Bonnie said.

Although the girls surprised many with their decision, they have been well supported by family, friends and staff.

"One friend said to us, 'You two are crazy. I'll pay you not to do it'," Bonnie said.

"I said I'll take the donation but you won't stop me from doing it," Felicity said.

Principal Christine Dolley said the girls were terrific role models for other students.

"We are very proud of them," she said.

"Felicity is our school captain and Bonnie is choir captain and Lyndhurst house captain.

"We try to instil a sense of community service.

It's something we try to develop in our senior leaders."

King's Barber Shop owner Anita Morris will do the honours at the school parade on Wednesday.
