Scores killed during jail riot

HEADLESS bodies thrown over prison walls, at least 56 people dead and a suspected 100 escaped and on the run - it's another riot in Brazil's crowded prison system.

Anisio Jobim jail had 2230 inmates but capacity for 590.

Late on Sunday two gangs went head to head and later exchanged gunfire with police and held 12 guards and 74 prisoners hostage - some were killed and some released.

It took 17 hours to bring the riot under control.

In March, police closed a 15m tunnel into the jail.

It was the bloodiest violence since police and rioters killed 111 in 1992.
