Scott tames the Blue Monster

AUSTRALIAN golfer Adam Scott has shot a six-under round of 66 to grab a share of the first round lead of the World Golf Championship's (WGC) Cadillac Championship in Doral, Florida.

Scott was in vintage form on the treacherous Blue Monster, taking command of the leaderboard early in the round before a lone slip-up at the sixth hole - his 15th of the day - forced him to share top spot with American Jason Dufner.

Starting the round on the 10th, Scott made a mockery of the windy conditions, birding five of his first nine holes before a back-to-back eagle-birdie combination gave him a one shot lead heading into the home stretch.

But errant tee shots on the front-nine's third and fourth hole seemed to upset Scott's rhythm and Australia's number two golfer could only manage six pars and one bogey over the closing holes.

Fellow countrymen Aaron Baddeley (three-under) and Greg Chalmers (one-under) are well positioned in the chasing pack, while Geoff Ogilivy and Jason Day have their work cut out for them after both recording one-over scorecards.

Despite making a good start to the year, Baddeley was slow out of the blocks in his opening round, making the turn at only one-under.

But three birdies on the back-nine pushed him to within three shots of the lead.

A two-time winner on the recent Australia tour, Chalmers at one time was within sight of the lead after reaching four-under, but a woeful closing two holes, including finding the water on the 18th, saw him drop three shots and fall down the pecking order.

John Senden and Marcus Fraser, both at four-over, will need a strong showing across the next three days to have any chance of claiming the title.
