Scouts to hit the grills for a good cause

TOMORROW morning Warwick's Glennie Heights Scouts Group will be barbecueing up a storm for a great cause.

Together with Bunnings Warwick, the scouts are holding a fundraiser for Hummingbird House, Queensland's only purpose-built children's hospice.

Scout leader Adam Wooding said being involved in a fundraiser for Hummingbird House was an amazing opportunity.

"Unfortunately today, our youth don't have the opportunities for interaction with the public like they have in years gone by," Mr Wooding said.

"Serving at the barbecue enables youth members to speak to adults giving them self confidence and strengthening their social interaction skills.

"More than this though, the Hummingbird House fundraiser enables our youth to consider how fortunate they are, reflecting on the lives of the children who will benefit from the funds raised and gain that warm glow we all get from serving others."

Mr Wooding said a major part of scouting was the duty to others.

"Scouts is a community organisation and we are always more than happy to help other community organisations in any way we can," he said.

Mr Wooding said the scout group was grateful to Bunnings for its support.

"They are also playing a major role in this event as they are providing the venue, facilities, food and drinks for the fundraiser.

"The Glennie Heights Scout Group is very thankful for the fantastic work that Bunnings Warwick is doing for the community and we look forward to working with them on future projects and events."

Hummingbird House is planned to be a home away from home where kids with a life-limiting condition can take part in creative therapies, be with their parents and receive end-of-life care.

Over 3700 children live with a life-limiting condition in Queenland, which mean they are not expected to reach 18 years of age.

Government funding will make up $1.5<TH>million of the estimated $3.2<TH>million Hummingbird House is expected to cost to operate per year, the rest must come from community support.
