Hervey Bay Seafood Festival draws big crowd for local fare
LOCALLY caught prawns, scallops and fish were on the menu for thousands of people at the annual Hervey Bay Seafood Festival.
A crowd packed out Urangan's Fishermen's Park for the festival from 9:30am on Sunday, as dozens of local fisheries operated stalls.
First-time stallholders Australian Ocean King Prawn Company were swamped by eager seafood-lovers.
Process worker Jane Lamont said the business used 30kg of prawns, 35kg of scallops and 18 trays of rolled prawn cutlets to feed the hungry morning crowd.
"It has been a great day," she said.
Ms Lamont praised the number of people from the Fraser Coast who turned out for the festival alongside tourists.
"It is really good to see the locals coming out in force," she said.
Former Hervey Bay resident Linda Suddaby said she still came back each year for the festival.
Brisbane's Lurleens Restaurant executive chef Andrew Mirosch led the festival's pop-up restaurant Tastes of the Bay.
This year, the menu included Spanish mackerel, local prawns and scallops, Moreton Bay Bugs, spanner crab and locally grown strawberries.
Hospitality students from Urangan State High School helped to staff the restaurant.
Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell said the festival was one of the most iconic events on the Fraser Coast.
He said it highlighted one of the region's most significant industries and helped to bring national exposure for Hervey Bay.
