Search is on for SES recruits in Warwick
FOR those residents looking for an opportunity to give back to the community, Warwick SES may have the answer for you.
The Warwick SES is holding its annual recruitment drive this month, with the target being field operation members.
The recruitment nights will be held on Tuesday, February 2 and 9, starting at 7pm at the SES headquarters in the Town Hall car park.
While the group currently boasts about 40 members, Area Controller John Newley said 50-55 would be ideal.
"We understand that as volunteers, people are not always available and have commitments, whether it be work, family or otherwise," he said.
Mr Newley said the group was looking for residents aged over 18 years.
"We are looking for fit individuals for field operations," he said.
"People who are able to do things like land search, operate a chainsaw or climb on a roof."
Mr Newley said all training and uniforms were provided for free to members.
"We basically support the residents throughout the Southern Downs, so it is predominantly storm damage," he said.
Opportunities for specialised training are also available.
"Warwick and Stanthorpe have vertical rescue teams, which only a few groups in Queensland have," Mr Newley said.
"We also have away teams, which can be deployed to other areas when requested, for major events."
Mr Newley said recruits must be able to commit to the initial training, although make-up sessions could be conducted.
"It's a big commitment for the first six months while the recruits undertake the basic training," he said.
"They need to be available every Tuesday if possible."
Mr Newley said the SES group was a terrific team.
"I call it the big orange family," he said.
