DRIVERS have flocked from Brisbane, Tweed Heads and Ipswich to take part in round 3c of the Queensland Super Sprint series at Morgan Park this weekend.

Among them is Ken Gray from Brisbane, who crafted his race car with his bare hands and dedicated it to his late brother, Tony.

Mr Gray said he based the design on a 1960s race car and used his former training as a panel beating teacher to get the job done.

But his expertise spans right back to his childhood.

"My brothers started go karts in 1959 and I ended up doing the welding," he said.

"It keeps me active."

Mr Gray said there was still work to be done on the vehicle, which he has been racing for about 18 months.

Mr Gray was taking to the track with about 100 other drivers this weekend.

Racing started yesterday and will continue at the track today.
