See who was out and about for NAIDOC celebrations today
FOR Warwick mother Bridgette Brown, the women in her life have taught her the value of respect and an appreciation of heritage she is now passing onto the next generation.
Ms Brown was joined by her daughters and niece when she attended the Queensland Police NAIDOC Week flag- raising ceremony at Warwick Police Station yesterday, celebrating the theme "Because of her, we can".
Ms Brown said women took on the role of keeping families close.
"We take care of the family and anyone who comes into the family,” she said.
Ms Brown said it was important for the younger members of her family to attend NAIDOC events to acknowledge traditional ownership of land, "to pass on the culture of NAIDOC Week and the importance of who we are”.
At the ceremony, acting inspector Jamie Deacon gave a speech acknowledging the contribution of indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women in history.
The ceremony ended with the raising of the indigenous, Torres Strait Islander and Queensland Police flags.
