Seeds sown for exciting new club
A SPUR of the moment comment on a Facebook has blossomed into a new gardening club that has taken root among Warwick's budding gardeners.
Southern Downs Garden Centre owner Ian Macdonald didn't realise the seed he had sown when he mentioned the possibility of starting a garden club, but when enthusiastic responses started flowing in, he realised he'd struck a chord.
"I threw the idea out in a video and we didn't think anyone would bite but boy did I get it wrong... by the time I got up the next morning we had people saying count me in and it just took off from there,” Mr Macdonald said.
The club aims to bring it all back to basics and focus on how to establish a successful garden in our local conditions.
"We have quite difficult growing conditions in Warwick, where it can get to minus 10 degrees in summer and 42 in winter but all too often people over complicate gardening, and we can kill our gardens with kindness” Mr Macdonald said.
"Mother nature says whack it in the ground and forget about it!
"So we'll be looking at all the practicalities of gardening and work on the simplicity theory.”
The club will cover a range of different skills and topics, from horticulture and propagating to potting and pruning techniques.
"We don't want to create any competition with the Horticultural Society or the Diggers Club - we're just trying to talk to people about the nuts and bolts of gardening,” Mr Macdonald said.
In the name of fun and adventure, there might also be the chance for a few social outings to nearby botanical gardens and other destinations.
Mr Macdonald said the idea was all about establishing a fun, social environment where everyone could share their knowledge in a practical way.
"Gardening is a very tactile process and if you can get your hands on it you'll learn about it,” Mr Macdonald said.
"I always say we learn as much from our customers as they learn from us.
"It will be fun and relaxing - you have to enjoy it, you have to want to do it.”
The club plans to congregate on the fourth Saturday of every month with the first meeting on January 7.
Membership is free, informal and open to people of all ages and experience levels.
