Warwick selling agent defies odds

LIVESTOCK sales may not be the ideal work location for some but for Aimee Whittaker they're just the place she wanted to kickstart her career.

For the last month the 19-year-old has worked at the Warwick sheep sale, learning tricks of the trade from livestock selling agents.

Having left school at 15, Miss Whittaker said she loved her somewhat unconventional choice of employment.

"Animals have always been a strong interest for me," she said.

"I'd rather be outside working with cattle and sheep than stuck in an office.

"I worked at the cattle sale on Tuesdays starting last year and I just approached one of the agents, Olly Gray at Elders, to see if he had any work somewhere like Toowoomba or here in Warwick and he said he had work at the sheep sale."

Having grown up around horses, Miss Whittaker said she was happy to get her hands dirty and get to know animals in the saleyards.

She said she had attended agricultural college but was eager to keep learning from her mentors on the job and hoped the experience would blossom into a career as an agent.

Although the saleyards are mostly male dominated, Miss Whittaker said that didn't phase her from chasing the job of her dreams.

"I've picked it up pretty easy, and have learnt to sort of understand how working with the animals works, but a lot of it is common sense really," she said.

"Every job I've had has been male dominated so I'm used to it, and I want to apply for the Elders apprenticeship later this year because I want to be a livestock agent.

"It's been pretty easy for me, not too tricky at all really, the only difficult thing has been when I'm trying to listen out and write down who buys the sheep and how much they've bought them for because the agent are saying it all so quickly.

"The only practice I've had at that is what I've done through Elders."

With unshakeable tenacity, Miss Whittaker said there were yet to be any big surprises coming her way.

Despite having a great start in the industry, she said she appreciated she still had a lot to learn and was happy to take it all in from the professionals.

"The most rewarding thing for me is just being out there and learning every day from people who have been doing it there whole lives," she said.

"I really enjoy that part of the job, especially when they're so knowledgeable."
