Seniors finding exercise healthy

IN A show of fitness that would make many half their age struggle, senior citizens are hitting the gym hard.

The Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre has been running seniors fitness classes and the spritely attendees can't get enough.

"We really do love coming here and a lot of that comes down to the instructors. They challenge us but they don't push us too far and they are really supportive," Bev McCarthy said.

While they all agree that their regimes are great fun, they find the regular exercise has many benefits.

"We have all seen improvements in our physical health but also mentally and socially ... we all feel so great after our classes," Bev said.

While many of the attendee's are experiencing general wellbeing due to their efforts, Carol Hawken and her husband have serious medical conditions and have been using exercise to help them recover from them.

Mrs Hawken has been managing her diabetes with exercise and diet for some time and her husband, who is recovering from bowel cancer, is also finding exercise helps.

"I would recommend it to everyone, especially if you are dealing with illness ... you won't regret it," she said.

The classes feature a wide range of activities including ball games, hockey and Pilates, which the attendee, say keeps the workouts challenging and interesting.

"We all have different favourites and it can even get competitive, which is so funny. Sometimes we joke that we feel like we are in school again," Bronwyn Snow said.

Bronwyn's husband, Bob, agrees but does have one wish. "It would be good to see a few more blokes here," he laughed.

The seniors say exercise isn't the only key to feeling great, admitting they're now "off the coffee and cake afterwards". They also encourage other seniors to come along and give the classes a go.

"We would recommend getting active to everyone. Physically, socially and mentally you feel terrific," Marilyn Gillespie said.

"The first step is just to start. Everyone knows their limits and you challenge yourself within those. Pretty soon you will find your fitness builds and you can do things that you couldn't before."

WIRAC offers seniors fitness classes Mondays and Fridays and Heart Foundation Heartmoves, which is a gentler program, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
