THE Australian sevens team has finally appointed a new coach, after the shock resignation of Geraint John last August.

Canberra-born Andy Friend will mentor the team at this year's Rio de Janeiro Olympics and has made no secret of the fact he wants Wallaby star Quade Cooper in his squad.

Friend will join the Australian sevens program from Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath after the conclusion of the current Japan Top League season at the end of this month.

The former Brumbies coach said the team's character was the most exciting thing he had noticed looking on from afar.

"We've got a couple of speedsters and a couple of playmakers which is also good and I'm keen to see them and talk about game style we need to potentially win a gold medal," he told rugby.com.au.

"I think they're capable of beating any side in the world."
