Sevens kick off season

THE Warwick Hockey Association wants people to know they may be down, but they’re definitely not out.

Tomorrow the club will kick off its pre-season

Sevens tournament and co-ordinator Jim Rolfe is urging the community to throw its support behind the club and the event.

“After the floods and the damage we weren’t going to have the tournament,” Rolfe said. “But it’s a great way to motivate us before the season and to generate a bit of support.

“It’s a good, friendly start to the season in a friendly atmosphere.”

The action-packed tournament is in its third year and will run over both Sat- urday and Sunday, drawing competitors from the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and the Gold Coast.

Ipswich usually competes, but due to the damage of the flooding they are unable to attend.

The teams are mixed and feature “veteran” players – men over 40 and women over 35.

Player Michelle Eastwell said the number of women competing has grown steadily, with about 14 competing in the Warwick teams.

There will be a total of six teams and each will compete in five games and a final before the grand final.

Mr Rolfe said there have been a number of new players sign up for the season, but said the club still wants more players to support the club.

“We need our players more than ever,” he said.

Enrolments for the new season will be taken all weekend at the clubhouse, and volunteers are needed to help out today from 3pm and over the weekend.
