Seventy teams in Warwick for junior football carnival

FOOTBALL: About 70 teams have nominated for the annual Warwick District Football Association Junior Carnival at Queens Park today. .

Association president Garry Spence said the junior carnival was the biggest event on the football calendar.

"Teams are coming from centres including Oakey, Goondiwindi, Toowoomba, Stanthorpe, Tenterfield, Glen Innes and more than 10 teams from Warwick,” he said.

"The carnival is for players from under 6 to U16. Boys and girls will play in the same competitions in most of the younger age groups.”

The Warwick football weekend started on Friday night at Queens Park when the Warwick colts had a 3-0 win against over Highfields Colts.

Will Gordon, Gift Lisie and Devon Cooper scored the goals for the home team.

Coach Tony Cooper said the Warwick team dominated the whole match with Highfields only having 11 players.

"Warwick kept Highfields to only a couple of scoring shots all game and a great save by Alek Ebneter in the final minutes kept the away team to nil,” Cooper said.

"It was a great game by all the boys.”

The Warwick ladies are second on the competition table and will play the unbeaten Willowburn at Willowburn today at 11am.

Warwick is the only team to draw with Willowburn this season, 1-all, in the last round in Warwick.

Last Sunday, Warwick won 3-1 against St Alban's after leading 3-0 at half-time.

Coach Derek Kane is hoping for more consistency through the whole 90 minutes this weekend.

"Our team has been improving all season,” he said.

"We have a couple out this weekend with work commitments.”

Tish Kendall and Ashleigh Kane will return today.
