Severe storms drive hail, damaging winds towards Warwick
UPDATE: A severe thunderstorm producing large hailstones and damaging winds is moving east across the Southern Downs towards Warwick.
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that storms are forecast to affect the area west of Warwick by 4:35 pm.
"Damaging winds and large hailstones are likely."
EARLIER: A severe weather warning has been issued for the Southern Downs with heavy thunderstorms and possible hail expected to hit the region this afternoon.
The warning has been issued to Warwick, Stanthorpe, Inglewood, Clifton, Pittsworth and Moonie.
Meteorologist Julian De Morton from the Bureau of Meteorology said residents can expect little rain to accompany the afternoon storms.
"We are expecting a large number of storms across the Southern Downs region in the next few hours," he said.
"Currently there are no thunderstorms in the area but as we see a trough running through near Goondiwindi, we will see some storms bringing damaging winds and hail.
"However it is unlikely there will be much heavy rainfall between now and this evening."
As the storms move in an Eastern direction towards the coast, parts of the Southern Downs will be included in a severe storm warning for the Brisbane Metropolitan region.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services has advised anyone living in the affected areas should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
