Shaky start to trip of a lifetime
A SECURITY scare at Sydney's International Airport left the Killarney School of Dance stranded on its way to Los Angeles on Monday.
The 27 dancers, aged 10 to 19, and their large contingent of around 50 family members, had just started the dancing trip of a lifetime to Disneyland when two people broke airport security lines.
Don Haidley, whose daughter and wife were on the trip, said hearing about it was a little nerve-wracking.
"From what I've heard two people walked through security gates, setting off alarms and upsetting the whole airport," said Mr Haidley.
"Apparently some of the group were already through the first security check but had to be re-screened after the unauthorised people and the situation were dealt with.
"You can just imagine how they would have been feeling, just after the September 11 anniversary, but it all worked out in the end."
Mr Haidley said he heard from his family yesterday morning, after their arrival.
"To add to their already crazy start, they had an unplanned landing delay to avoid an army decoy," he said.
"It's good to know that they arrived and landed safely."
Before their hectic schedule begins, they were enjoying some down time by the pool and getting settled in, Mr Haidley said.
Under the guidance of travel dance specialists Dance Around the World, the group is on a 10-day performance and sightseeing trip, with some families choosing to extend their stay.
The highlight and main reason for the trip is their performance in the Australian Dance Spectacular Main Street Parade at Disneyland this Saturday, said Mr Haidley.
The group will also perform at the California Adventure Park on Sunday.
"Disneyland offers groups the opportunity to go over and take part in their march," he said.
"They have been rehearsing for months and will do a bit more once they are there."
The dancers learnt a 20-minute piece choreographed by Disneyland for the Main Street Parade.
As well as keeping their dancing commitments, the group will enjoy some free time, breakfast at Goofy's Kitchen with the Disney characters, a pass to Disneyland for the duration of their stay and a visit to Universal Studios.
"We raised money for about 15 months to help out with the cost of the trip," said fundraising committee member Cathy Cockram.
"However, most of the cost was covered by the families."
