A LATE converted try by Gatton ended the Warwick Cowboys premiership dreams in the Hutchinson Builders TRL competition yesterday.

Warwick held a 30-6 lead at half-time in the preliminary final at Clive Berghofer Stadium but a conversion from sharp-shooting goalkicker Jason Wilmot right on full-time saw the Hawks snatch a 32-30 win against the Cowboys to book a place in the grand final against Wattles.

The Cowboys got out to a 12-0 lead after back-to-back tries to wingers Declan McLoughlin and Hayden McNicol.

Tries soon after to Ben Sullivan and Jarred Bradfield had Warwick up 24-0 after 18 minutes as the Cowboys had all of the momentum.

Gatton fullback Steve Franciscus was able to get the Hawks on the board with a try in the 33rd minute before Joe Fuimaono crashed over the line to give Warwick a strong 30-6 lead at half-time.

Gatton ate into that just two minutes in the second-half with a try to Nick Boney and kept eating away at the deficit with tries to Christian Thompson, Aaron Werth and halfback Jason Wilmot.

The Hawks got the score back to 30-26 with 15 minutes to go and capped a remarkable turnaround in the 79th minute when big forward Dennis Burgoyne went over for a try to level the scores.

Wilmot then slotted the conversion for the win.

"They're really close-knit boys and as you saw today they really dug (deep) for each other," Gatton coach Tom Friend said.

"In the second half we really dug deep. We tightened up in defence," Friend said.

"The first half was terrible. I've got to take blame. We didn't warm up properly."

Warwick had all of the momentum in the first half but was left to rue letting Gatton back in.

"I really don't know what happened at the end. We gave away a 30-point lead and it's heartbreaking," Warwick captain-coach Jason Bradfield said.

Warwick also missed out on the grand final in second-division going down 24-14 to Millmerran.
