SHATTERED: Publicans dismayed by 'malicious' attack on hotel
A STRING of "malicious” attacks on an iconic Warwick pub has left owners angry and upset at the ceaseless damage brought upon their business.
Warwick publicans Ann and George Smith woke on Sunday morning to find the prominent front door of the Stockyard Hotel smashed and shattered by vandals.
It is the latest and most damaging in a series of attacks on the small hotel on the corner of Canning and Percy Sts.
"It's just, it's ridiculous,” Mrs Smith said.
"You're trying to have somewhere nice where people can come and then idiots do this sort of stuff.
"What is it with people, don't they have any respect for people's properties any more?”
Hopes for catching the attackers remain in CCTV footage of the attack, which is currently being reviewed by police.
The footage shows a man running to the front door of the hotel about 25 minutes past midnight on Saturday as three others looked on.
Mrs Smith said it was difficult to tell exactly how the vandalism occurred, but the man may have "shoulder barged” the door.
"Then they just ran off,” she said.
Mrs Smith said it was a sign of disrespect and she was "fed up”.
Replacing the "shattered” glass door would be expensive, according to Mrs Smith.
This is not the first time the hotel has been targeted.
Mrs Smith said about three weeks ago a group of people threw rocks at the side window, smashing the glass.
"And then there was another one a couple of months ago where people were all sitting around at the bar and a girl just ran up and punched the window and messed up the fence,” she said.
"It's ridiculous, it stinks.”
Warwick Police officer in charge Jamie Deacon said acts of wilful damage to property were an uncommon occurrence in Warwick.
"In reality acts of wilful damage to hotels are becoming less prevalent with the advent of responsible serving of alcohol and CCTV cameras at licenced venues,” Senior Sergeant Deacon said.
He encouraged people to report acts of vandalism to the police.
Loyal customers of the hotel have voiced their outrage on social media and called to "name and shame” the vandals if caught.
"Nobody has any respect these days,” Christine Barbierato said.
