Sheep dog handlers at Karara trial at weekend

WINTON sheep dog handler Jim O'Connell, who has represented Queensland nine times, recorded a second with Paw in the Queensland Supreme Sheep Dog Championships at Karara at the weekend.

The event was won by Brad Anderson, from Beaudesert, with Shaunder Millie.

Mr O'Connell and wife Rhonda run 5000 sheep on their property.

"Rhonda and I usually travel to the trials with dogs on the back of the ute and a caravan for accommodation,” he said.

"She didn't come this time.”

The O'Connells had 300mm of rain in 11 days in the recent big wet and lost 500 sheep, predominately to bogging.

Swan Creek handler Geoff Gibson (Swampoak Myha) and Garry Barker (Barker's Clifford) won state selection.

The Karara competition went for four days.
