Shepherd wins polocrosse top gong

POLOCROSSE: Warwick player Cameron Shepherd won best and horse from a losing team at the annual Killarney Polocrosse Club Carnival.

In the battle for the Grayson Family Trophy, Tansey beat Warwick 20-9 in the final.

Warwick secured a finals spot with victory against Gold Coast and Tansey was too good for a Cunningham team including Australian World Cup player Lauren Cant.

Shepherd was outstanding in the No.1 position for Warwick throughout the carnival and in the final which was played against a Tansey team including Queensland-based World Cup player Trent Collins.

Killarney club carnival co-ordinator Col Bloomfield said the carnival attracted 44 teams, the most for five years.

"It was a really good carnival, the fields played exceptionally well and everyone was happy," Bloomfield said.

The Polocrosse Association of Australia had two under-21 development teams at the carnival as part of a training weekend and the teams went head-to-head in two games on Saturday and one yesterday.

The teams included players from Queensland and northern New South Wales, including some from the Southern Downs.

The coaches were Warwick player Ashley Wheeler and Sydnee Doolan from the Tansey club.

There was a Killarney connection to the trophy winners in the juniors, with Shane Lamb best horse and rider in the junior competition playing for runner-up Cunningham.

Warwick won the juniors and Warwick 5 won D-grade.
