Sherry eyes tourism for council

ANOTHER council hopeful has chosen to use the start of the campaign period to declare her intentions - Warwick's Sherry Leach yesterday confirmed she would run as a councillor.

Mrs Leach said she was thinking about running for sometime and made the decision after seeing who else had put up their hands.

"There really wasn't that many potential candidates apart from the current councillors," she said.

"I didn't really see anyone I would want to vote for apart from a couple."

Spurred on by that and the fact she found herself with more time on her hands thanks to her family growing up, Mrs Leach said the timing was right.

"I just thought I have something to offer," she said.

"The best candidates have good rounded life experience, know how to run a business, have had a family and can relate to the community.

"And with Mally McMurtrie running for mayor, that leaves a spot."

Mrs Leach said she wanted to see the councillors embrace the entire "shire" and be a united front.

"I don't see how we could successfully de-amalgamate, it would be too expensive," she said.

"But if we were to hold a local referendum and if the majority of the community wanted to do that, I would see what could be done."

Mrs Leach said she had a keen interest in tourism - which included publishing magazines Vintage Drops and Country Stops and Southern Downs Homeview - and would like to see more focus on it if elected.

She sees herself as a genuine person who keeps promises.

"I say what I mean and I mean what I say," she said.

John Randall confirmed late yesterday he intends to run as a councillor, after last week saying he was undecided about running for mayor.

Whispers have been heard that a former Warwick Shire Council councillor has been testing the waters too.

But with time running out to nominate with the March 27 closing date fast approaching, all will be revealed in the coming weeks.
