Shock prize win for the Powell family

ONE entry form and one visit to the Killarney Co-Op, was all it took for the Powell family from Yangan to win the Warwick Daily News Massive Christmas Stocking Giveaway competition worth more than $6000.

When Kelly Powell put the entry form in at the Co-op she hardly expected to win.

And with thousands of entries, from 41 stores across the region in this year's competition, which was run in conjunction with the Warwick Chamber of Commerce, having one slip in the barrel meant winning was a pretty slim chance.

"I was not expecting to win at all," Mrs Powell said.

"I was very shocked when I got the phone call; I had actually forgotten I had entered the competition."

Her children Cameron and Melanie were left speechless when they arrived at the

Daily News office to collect their prizes.

Both were impressed with the ukulele.

"It is just amazing," Melanie said.

Husband Mark Powell was also left shocked by the sheer amount of items in the stocking donated by businesses from across the region.

Mrs Powell said the range of gifts was outstanding and said it would help make Christmas just that little bit more special.

"There really is something for everyone here," she said.

The family have been living in the Southern Downs for the past five years, but moved to Yangan a year ago.

It was the first time they had entered the competition and the biggest prize haul they had ever won.

Getting everything from an ice cream maker, hair dryer, dog food, plum puddings, footballs, soccer balls, a cooler bag, two mirrors and numerous gift vouchers into the back of the car did prove a slight challenge.

And while the Powells' Christmas celebrations will be extra special this year the rest of the region will be hoping the possible thunderstorm holds off until after Christmas and the Boxing Day races.

Today is expected to be very warm reaching a top of 37.

An afternoon thunderstorm is predicted for tomorrow which will reach a top of 29 degrees.

A top of 29 and an afternoon storm is also predicted for Boxing Day.
