Shocking battery theft spree hits the region
ABOUT 150 vehicle batteries, a generator and chainsaw have been stolen from across the Southern Downs in a spate of thefts.
Warwick Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Constable Glen Roche said the thefts occurred at four different locations across the region.
A generator and chainsaw were stolen from the Leyburn waste transfer station between June 25 and 27, before about 40 vehicle batteries were stolen from Clifton waste transfer station overnight on June 27.
A further 50 vehicle batteries were stolen from Allora waste transfer station on June 28 and last Wednesday night another 60 were taken from a Clifton mechanic.
Clifton police said the vehicle batteries at Clifton were being collected as a fundraiser for the Wattles Rugby League Football Club and were estimated to be worth about $600.
Snr Const Roche said police believed all the thefts were linked, with the batteries stolen to be sold for the lead or as scrap metal.
"In all these incidents they're cutting chain to gain entry,” he said.
