Shop assistant scared for her life during armed robbery

DETECTIVES are hunting a brazen bandit who marched into a local supermarket and held a shop assistant at gunpoint, before making off with about $1000 in cash.

A sole female staff member of Rod's Food Market in Mellefont St, Gladstone, was forced to hand over the cash to the thief, after he walked in about 10.30pm Monday and demanded money, brandishing a dark-coloured handgun at the shop assistant.

Gladstone Criminal Investigation Branch detective senior sergeant Luke Peachey said the violent nature of the offence was highly concerning.

"It's really, really concerning," he said.

"Any sort of robbery is concerning, however the propensity to use a firearm, with what can actually happen if that person does use that firearm... it just goes beyond belief that people are still out there doing these sorts of offences."

It appeared the robbery had been premeditated, to coincide with a time where the armed robber could approach the isolated worker and carry out the offence.

Police said they were looking for a man about 180cm tall and of a slim build, wearing dark clothes and sunglasses. He also had a facial covering during the robbery.

Det Snr Sgt Peachey asked anyone who may have witnessed a person matching that description around the Dawson Hwy area headed towards Hungry Jacks from about 10.30pm onwards on Monday to contact Gladstone Police or Crime Stoppers.
