Shoppers bag Boxing Day bargains

MANAGERS and owners of the Warwick businesses who opened for the Boxing Day rush were kept on their feet yesterday with customers keen to take advantage of the post-Christmas sales.

While most Warwick shop owners remained closed to spend time with friends and family, the few that opened concluded it was worth it.

Dick Smith manager Andre Puskas said Boxing Day lived up to its reputation in terms of customer numbers and sales.

"We've got quite a few items that will be on sale for the rest of the week," he said.

"One of the best buys is a Sony 46-inch LED television, for $799. When it came in six months ago, it was $1700. I'd expect that to do well."

He said there hadn't been an item more popular than the others and customers were snapping up bits of everything.

Further up the road at RetraVision, the staff were trialing their first Boxing Day opening.

Co-owner Kate Balint said it was "a bit of trial and error" but by lunch-time yesterday, it had appeared to be worth it.

"It's a mixture of locals and visitors coming in and they're just looking for an outing," she said.

"We've had a lot come in and say they can't believe the shopping centre's not open."

RetraVision yesterday began its Boxing Day sale, which ends on January 11.

Among the big discount items are a Sony 81cm television for $399, a 220L fridge for $398 and a dishwasher for $398.

RetraVision will be open today through until Saturday, when it will close at 12.30pm. It will resume normal hours at 9am on January 3, after closing for New Year.

Dick Smith is open from 10am to 3pm today and for the rest of the week as usual. It is closed on New Year's Day.

Harvey Norman will open from 9am to 4pm today and for the rest of the week.

Rose City Shoppingworld opens today from 8am to 2pm through to Saturday from 9am to 4pm. It is closed Sunday-Monday, January 1-2.
