YOUR SAY: Should shops open doors on Sundays?
SEVEN day trading is a topic that continues to divide the Warwick community, with strong views both for and against from Daily News readers.
Those against the idea of seven day trading argued that Sunday should be a day for family, a day off for those who already work hard during the week.
SEVEN DAY SHOPPING BACK ON SOUTHERN DOWNS AGENDA
Ros and Mike Keim said they believed Warwick didn't need seven trading.
"Sunday is for church, sports, family picnics and visiting friends," they wrote.
'Will those who work on Sunday be paid than the staffer who works on Monday? Will the banks and credit unions be opening on Sundays?"
The Keims also questioned where local people would support shopping locally on a Sunday.
"It's bad enough opening all day in the shopping mall as it is - it should close at 1pm now on a Saturday," they wrote.
"Never mind the thriving shopping centres, what happens to our little corner stores who give the best service?"
Bella Schmidt said she believed seven day trading would kill the already slowing business in the main street.
"Look at the shopping centre on the two Sunday trading days at Christmas - no store makes enough money to warrant being open," she wrote.
"It doesn't create more jobs at all it creates tighter budgets for stores because it costs twice as much to open on a Sunday."
There are definitely concerns for small business owners, with one reader questioning what shops people were expecting to be open on a Sunday.
"Small business owners I have spoken with have said they would not open on a Sunday because it is their one day a week off to spend with family or to just have a day off," Stephen Wilson wrote.
"With penalty rates it would not be worth paying their casuals to work on a Sunday.
"Exactly what shops are people expecting to be open on a Sunday? Supermarkets? IGA and Westside do already."
For all the opponents, there were also plenty of readers in support of extending trading hours to Sundays.
Peter Solomon said there was plenty of people who work shift work that would benefit from seven day trading.
"If you don't want to shop on Sunday - don't go," he wrote.
"Look at the Gold and Sunshine Coasts - thriving shopping centres open all day everyday or don't you do shopping there on Sunday when visits?
"Warwick is like the 1950's."
For others it was nice to see there was support for seven day trading amongst readers.
"Thank god there are enough people to support it," Kathy Dante wrote.
"To be honest I was shocked when we moved here to find that trading hours were years behind other places."
