Show, rodeo events need larger venue
WARWICK Polocrosse identity Cameron Shepherd has renewed calls for the Warwick Showgrounds to be relocated to Morgan Park.
Mr Shepherd made his call during an interview at the Sports Star dinner on Saturday night.
The move has been discussed previously and features heavily in the Morgan Park Master Plan, written in 2010.
Mr Shepherd said he had attended the Warwick Rodeo since he was a kid.
"I've seen it grow and grow," he said.
"There seems to be a few others that are going ahead and I want to see Warwick keep growing.
"I think Morgan Park would be ideal.
"At the same token I'm not sure if it is too far out of town.
"We still need the town to be supportive of it.
"The show and rodeo society has outgrown itself."
Southern Downs Mayor Peter Blundell said any move would be done with the agreement of the Warwick Show and Rodeo Society.
"It is a wonderful facility and they would certainly work well out there," he said.
"I'm not going to shove them out there without their will.
"It would provide more space but the show society would need to approach us about the move."
Warwick Show and Rodeo Society president Neville Fanning said the move would not happen in the foreseeable future.
"The grants are not available at the moment," he said.
"Before it happened there would be a lot of thought put in.
"It is a big deal to shift the showgrounds.
"The expense is too much."
The Morgan Park master plan suggests the move would provide more space and reduce the risk of the showgrounds being inundated during a flood.
The report lists the major concern, if the showgrounds do not relocate, as being inadequate infrastructure and the inability to expand.
If it were to move, there is the potential for 600 spectators.
Rodeo arenas, an office, stock yards, caretaker residence, car park, bus bays, toilets and camping areas are just some of the infrastructure that would be needed at the new location.
The estimated cost of pulling off the move is $30 million.
