Junior show sets new record
THE 16th Santa Gertrudis National Junior Show, which kicks off today at the Warwick Showgrounds, has just eclipsed last year’s attendance to set a new record.
Santa Gertrudis Australia general manager Russell Reed yesterday told the Daily News 118 kids aged between seven and 18 would attend the school this year, which was has only just beat last year’s record.
The new record would have been 120 kids, but two flood-bound students from Richmond have been unable to attend at the last minute.
The kids go through a raft of cattle-related activities during the course, which will finish up on Saturday, and are exposed to some of the most experienced people in the beef industries.
Each year the attendees are broken up into groups, which are named after names of old King Ranch bulls.
The Santa Gertrudis breed was first introduced in Australia 56 years ago when bulls from King Ranch were brought out to a property just near Warwick.
Mr Reed said the junior show was the biggest of its kind in Australia.
The students have travelled from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to attend.
Mr Reed said the show was almost entirely run by a 40-strong army of volunteers.
