Donations show Christmas spirit

MOST people's Christmas memories are cherished as some of the best times of their lives, filled with fun and laughter.

For others the festive season not only highlights their hardship but intensifies the financial and emotional stress that grips their day-to-day lives.

For the past eight years, the Warwick Red Cross has been working towards turning things around for local families doing it tough, through the Adopt A Family program.

This year people are being asked to sponsor a family and give them the Christmas they otherwise wouldn't have.

Program Support Officer Jodie Gilmore said this year was especially tough for some families who have had to put extra money into things such as flood repairs, leaving little to no money for Christmas.

Sponsoring a family is anonymous but Mrs Gilmore said despite that, it was hugely rewarding for those who offered a helping hand.

"Although you don't actually get to see the faces of the family, you do get great satisfaction from knowing you're helping someone," she said.

She said budgets can be set by the individual sponsor and donations could include toys, hamper packs, pantry items and clothes.

"It is up to what that person or family is able to give - some give a lot, but really it is the thought that counts," Mrs Gilmore said.

Mrs Gilmore said the selflessness of the sponsor is often met with tears of joy, with people blown away at the kindness of others.

"I have heard the appreciation of the families is quite emotional," Mrs Gilmore said.

"Obviously they are all going through not only financial hardship but also emotional."

A total of 44 families are in need of adoption and those interested in sponsoring can do so by picking up a sponsor pack from the Red Cross office, 41 Guy St.
