State schools urged to apply for grants funding
EDUCATION Minister Kate Jones has called on Warwick state schools to nominate for the 16th annual Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools for the chance to win a share in more than $370,000 in development grants.
"The Showcase Awards are acknowledged as the Queensland Government's most prestigious educational awards," Ms Jones said.
"Since 2000 the Showcase Awards have been rewarding schools and teachers who make a difference and significantly improve student outcomes.
"The awards recognise the excellent teaching and learning programs we have in our state schools across Queensland."
Ms Jones said previous award winners have highlighted the work of some extraordinary teachers, hardworking community volunteers and supportive principals.
"Last year the Royal Children's Hospital School was named as a state winner for its work with young victims of abuse or neglect," Ms Jones said.
"The unique program, combining therapy with early education, was an initiative with Act for Kids.
"Cleveland State School became a Showcase winner for the SPEAK program which helps parents teach their children language skills.
"The award-winning programs are diverse but they all make a difference to the lives of countless numbers of students.
"They inspire our state schools to foster and celebrate excellence in teaching."
Ms Jones encouraged all state schools to put their programs forward and nominate for the 2015 Showcase Awards.
"Last year there were 74 regional award winners, 21 state finalists, and seven state award winners who took home awards and grants to share with their school communities," Ms Jones said.
"We want to hear from all state schools with innovative, evidence-based programs in the early and primary years of schooling right through to the senior years."
Ms Jones said the winners will be announced later in the year at the Showcase Awards Gala Dinner hosted at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Nominations for the Showcase Awards are open until 5 June 2015.
