Siblings ride for Camp Quality

CAITLYN Meiklejohn and her brother Jacob are two of the likely starters in the Southern Downs Community Ride on Sunday which will raise funds for Camp Quality.

The ride starts at 8am Sunday in East St, outside the Big W Distribution Centre.

Caitlyn, who is often referred to as CJ, has received extensive treatment in hospital for a tumour on her pituitary gland, but she has the all-clear from her doctors.

While she was under treatment, Caitlyn started fundraising for Camp Quality in South Queensland, an organisation that provides support to 300 families from Coolangatta to Gympie.

The organisation runs a range of fantastic programs that bring a lot of fun and laughter to children hit by serious illness and their families.

"I am thinking about going in the ride," Caitlyn said.

"I like riding and am now on my third bike."

She and brother Jacob rode near their family home on Wednesday in the run-up to the community ride which will add to the $13,000 already raised by Caitlyn for Camp Quality.

While Caitlyn and Jacob are eyeing off the 6km ride from the start line in East St and then out and back along Canningvale Rd, there is a 13km option further out Canningvale Rd, a 33km ride through Canningvale and Junabee and then a 65km ride to Tannymorel, Yangan, Junabee and back to Big W.

All participants in the ride will go in the draw for a week-long holiday for four at the BigW Maroochy Palms Holiday Village. The draw will be held along with other giveaways after 11am Sunday and after the start of the 130km round of the Brisbane Camperland Queensland Road Team Series.

Nominations can be made on line at http://www.qld.cycling.org.au or by 7.30am on Sunday morning at the start line. Cost is $40 for adults ($30 each if in a team of four) and $10 children ($8) with all money made to go to Camp Quality.

Caitlyn's mother, Sharyn Meiklejohn, said she was hoping for a good turnout of community riders.

"The support for Caitlyn during her illness and with the fundraising is out of this world," she said.

Her father Neil said the death of his cousin, Margot Meiklejohn, late last month from a brain tumour brought home to him the reality for people fighting cancer.

Cycling Queensland president Mike Victor hopes the community ride will become an annual event "if it was a success this year".

The 18 teams start their weekend with a time trial and road race at Stanthorpe on Saturday.
