Simonelli wins bronze at Cycling Masters event
CYCLING: Warwick cyclist Tony Simonelli has found a new gear later in life and is taking out medals up and down the coast in masters cycling.
Simonelli won a bronze last weekend at the 2015 Cycling Australia Masters Road National Championships at Murwillumbah, NSW.
He won the bronze medal in the individual time trials on Friday with a time of 28:30.37 over the 20km course.
Simonelli missed out on silver by just 5.4 seconds behind Victorian rider Carmine Soriano.
John Cain, also from Victoria, took out the gold medal with a time of 27:17:67.
After winning the criterium and taking out silver in the time trials at the national championships last year, Simonelli said he felt under the pressure this year.
"I had a bit of a purple patch last year and the beginning of this year," Simonelli said.
"I found my way back and was happy with the performance."Having won the criterium last year I definitely felt like I was under pressure to perform this time around."
The Warwick rider said he had been to the Murwillumbah venue before and knew what to expect.
"There a lot of hills along the course," Simonelli said.
"It's a beautiful area but on the day it was blowing a gale."
Simonelli said he did a lot of strength training for the event and trained for motor pacing by following training partner Peter Wright riding a motorbike.
"We've trained together during the year depending on the event," Simonelli said. "He's a great help for my preparations."
On Saturday Tony competed in the 90km road race but missed out on a podium finish.
Three times a week, a group of up to six cyclists meet at the Warwick velodrome for up to two hours of training.
Keen cyclists wanting to train with the Warwick group welcome at 4.30pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at the velodrome in Australiana Park or at 4.30pm Wednesday at Morgan Park Raceway.
