Simply the best... Sam Hinze hits a winner

WARWICK has the best lady golfer in the Downs and South West district following the win by Sam Hinze in the closed championship at Dalby this week.

It was her second success in the event after first winning on her home course in 2012. She hit two scores of 82 to win at Dalby.

Joy Horgan, Nancy Howard, Jane Evans, Cheryl Sternberg, Samantha Foley and Hinze are the only Warwick winners of the closed event.

Foley won it while a junior and is now a strong enough chance to make it as a professional.

Sternberg won the District Open Championship with rounds of 82 and 78 after previously winning the same championship at Roma.

As she is now a member of Laidley Golf Club, which is not in the Downs and South Western district, she was ineligible to win the closed event.

Other Warwick winners in the championship were Liz Cockram, who won the best 36 hole nett in A grade with scores of 73 and 70 nett, beating fellow Warwick player Molly Seibel who was just behind in runner-up position with rounds of 77 and 70.

Janine Stewart played the game of her life shooting a 90 gross which gave her a 68 nett, the winning nett score in B grade for Day 2.

In two days of play, only four ladies shot rounds of sub 70 nett on the par 72 Dalby course.

The Warwick success started even before the main two-day event when the District Foursomes Championships were held.

This is a team event using only one ball per team and played on a hit-for-hit basis.

After being beaten in a play-off for the title at Gatton in 2013, Hinze and her partner, Carol Champion of St George, were excited to return a winning score of 85 gross to claim the Foursome Championship this year.

Another Warwick pair - Judy Lester and Margaret Adcock - were the championship runners-up with a creditable 88 gross.

After such a successful event for the Warwick players, plans are already being discussed for the trip to Mitchell where the next District Championship will be held in August next year.

The success by six Warwick players was even more amazing as they were part of a field of 128 players.
